PENANG: Software technician Nicol Ch'ng has avoided joining contests, thinking he will never win.
He is hoping the Power of 9 will convince him otherwise.

“This is the first time I am submitting an entry for any contest,†said Ch'ng who decided to try his luck at the Power of 9 Rank & Win booth at Gurney Plaza yesterday.
Droves of The Star readers made a pit stop at the booths at Gurney Plaza and Prangin Mall yesterday to submit their contest forms for the first and second week.
Housewife Yuen Yook Chen, 60, who came with her husband and daughter, submitted six entries.
“I am not aiming for the main cash prize of RM35,000. Any prize would be icing on the cake,†she said.
At the Prangin Mall booth, engineer D. S. Raj, 48, was seen submitting his first week contest forms to beat the deadline today.
“I came to personally submit the contest forms because if I mailed them, they might not arrive on time.
“The Power of 9 contest is so easy. There is no slogan and we don’t have to purchase anything to enter. Since I am already a Star reader, there is no harm trying my luck,†he said.
The Power of 9 Rank & Win contest began on Sept 11 and will be on for nine weeks until Nov 12. It is held in conjunction with The Star’s 35th anniversary.
During each of the nine weeks, there will be a main cash prize of RM35,000 and nine special prizes of RM1,999.
To enter, readers have to rank their nine favourite sections, columns or pages in The Star each week. Contest advertisements are published in The Star daily.
Contestants with the ranking that matches the overall popular vote will win or share the main cash prize.
In conjunction with the contest, a Power of 9 roadshow will be held from 4.30pm to 9pm (Monday to Friday) and 10.30am to 9pm (Saturday and Sunday) at the ground floor of Prangin Mall until Sept 24.
