KANGAR (Feb 14, 2007): Perlis Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim has asked Home Minister Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad to withdraw his statement that the MyVi lucky draw for MyKad applicants was "silly and rubbish".
Shahidan, who is also the Perlis Umno liaison chief, said Radzi's statement was over the top, especially when it involved his predecessor in the portfolio, Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid.

Both ministers are from Perlis.

Radzi had said yesterday the lucky draw, introduced in 2005, was a "silly decision" and that it was irresponsible of Malaysians to want to be given something for what they must do for their own country.

He has since withdrawn the draw, saying the prizes would be sold and the proceeds given to charity instead.

Azmi, who now holds the natural resources and environment portfolio, was not available for comment. He had announced the draw in 2005 in an effort to get Malaysians to change to MyKad in greater numbers.

Shahidan, who was approached by reporters today, said even if Radzi did not agree with the measure taken by Azmi, he should not have made such a strong statement.

"He should not say that the decision taken earlier was silly. If he wants to undo what Datuk Seri Azmi did, do it, but don't go to the extent of saying it was silly and rubbish," Shahidan said, reports Bernama.

"I certainly don't agree with this"

He said as the one who took over from Azmi, Radzi should not fault every plan that had been implemented before his time.

"It's the same in Perlis. Previous leaders had launched programmes but as the mentri besar now, it is not right for me to say they were rubbish or silly," he added.
